Your Adventure

Valliscaulians, War Heroes & Tapophilia

Beauly originates from French "Beau Lieu" meaning beautiful place. And it is indeed, even Mary Queen of Scots approved when she visited in 1564.

Right in the middle of this lovely town, you will find the ruins of Beauly Priory, founded in the 1230s for monks of the Valliscaulian order who came from France. Therefore, it is not much of a surprise that the Gaelic place name for Beauly is "A' Mhanachainn", the monastery, or even "Manachainn MhicShimidh", Lovat's monastery.

Lord Lovat is the chieftain of the Frasers, who owned much of the land around Beauly and whose history is strongly tied to Beauly and the surrounding area.

Explore the picturesque town of Beauly on this private walking tour that takes your around the ruins of the priory and some fine funerary monuments in its grounds onto the impressive Square and down to the River.
